Email to Deans for second year courses within division to administer QL instrument.

Dear Academic Deans,

The Quantitative Literacy ISLO Team needs your help!

The team, made up of Chatt State instructors from many academic disciplines, has been working steadfastly during the past three years to develop a worthwhile quantitative literacy assessment tool.  In order to gather baseline data about our students’ quantitative reasoning skills, this tool was administered during the 2018 Fall semester to students in college success classes.  The task now is to gather data during the Fall 2019 semester from students in second-year classes to determine if quantitative reasoning skills improve after completing college-level courses.

The Quantitative Literacy ISLO Team is seeking instructors of second-year courses in which the curriculum covers solving quantitative problems through the use of any combination of words, tables, graphs, charts and/or mathematical equations.  These instructors will be asked to administer the Quantitative Literacy assessment during the Fall 2019 semester and forward the data to the team for analysis.

Will you provide 5 to 10 second-year courses (subject + number) in your division that meet this quantitative literacy description above?  We would like this information by July 15 so the team can communicate directly with the instructors before the semester begins.

Scoring Meeting #3

Final scoring meeting to discuss findings from written response scoring. Team members discussed the plan for 2019-2020 as administering the instrument in both college success courses (to validate the scores from 2018-2019) and second year courses (to gather post-test results to compare to entering scores).  The team will recruit second year courses/instructors for administration and begin that recruitment with Deans.

Scoring Meeting #1

Members present:  C. Ebert, T. Williams, C. Lykins, and L. Norell

The written response questions, rubric matrix, and samples from each contributing course that had 10 or more responses were distributed to team members for evaluation.  There were 6 short answer questions, 5 of which have been mapped to the rubric.  Team members were asked to evaluate the final question using all areas of the rubric to determine the alignment(s) and score.  The members were asked to bring back the scores for the sampled student responses to the next meeting.   T. Williams will have the data from multiple choice and short answer questions for the team to review by the next meeting as well.

Overall assessment data collected from College Success Courses included 27 different sections of the course across three divisions (Nursing and Allied Health, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Mathematics and Sciences).  Approximately 422 responses to the instrument were collected across these sections.
